Why Can’t You Buy Cards Against Humanity In Stores? (the 1 Best Explanation)

Why can you not buy Cards Against Humanity in stores?

Cards Against Humanity is the most popular card game of the past several years.  It is a party game where one person, the Card Czar, asks questions and the rest of the people playing the game use cards they have been dealt to provide answers to the questions.  Although the questions could be about anything they are usually of a slightly adult nature.  They may be a little bit offensive or they could have a double meaning.  The object of the game is to see who can form the funniest answer based on the question card and their chosen answer card.

The players vote on which answer is the best so the system is really fair.  The game’s designers say this is the way your friends find out what you really think of them and the world.  It’s all meant to be in good fun and the game is so popular that people became bored with the original set of cards.  There have been six expansion sets released to date and I have no doubt that more are on the way.

Many of the questions have a political aspect to them but they could just as easily be about your own beliefs, your friends and family, or basic human nature.  The game’s big punch line is that it brings out the worst in truly horrible people (you and your friends).

Alas! It seems there is no way to buy this wonderful card game from stores.  You can buy it online but it is only found in a very small number of stores.  I first learned about this game from a blog post on Communizine titled Where to Buy Cards Against Humanity.  As promised the article explains where you can buy the card game.  It all boils down to either Amazon.Com or the official Website.

Not so long ago another article appeared to explain that you can buy Cards Against Humanity at Walmart stores as well as at Amazon and the official Website.  This is good news for people who don’t want to wait for the cards to arrive by mail.  You could pay extra but you will never be able to pick up the cards right away.  Since Walmart sells the game you can arrange to drive by your local store and buy a copy of the deck.  But you will most likely have to buy the expansion sets online.

But why can you not buy the game Cards Against Humanity in most stores?  It turns out the game designers themselves did not want to distribute the game through major retailers.  I don’t know why Walmart was able to land a contract with them but they originally said that they would only sell the game online.  And in 2014 they said they would sell the game through small gaming stores.  But now they are selling the game through one or more major retailers.

It’s strange but I guess that is what money does for a business.  When you have so much money coming in you just cannot stop yourself from accepting contracts you once said you would refused.

I think that as more stores pick up the game you will find it easier to buy Cards Against Humanity, although I hope online sales remain strong for a long time to come.  I believe it would be better for small business owners to see the success of one of their own than for that success to be buried in the financial statements of large corporations.

If you want to learn more about the game you should read this very interesting case study on the Kickstarter Website.  That is where Cards Against Humanity got its beginning, just so you know.  It’s all there: the history of the game and why it became so popular.
